Something Hopeful

Something Hopeful

I got this text message this morning from a neighbor across the street. I had taken a few other pictures since receiving this assignment in class yesterday, but when I saw this message pop up on my phone, I realized that capturing this image conveyed the hope I needed today. This image gives me hope because it reminds me of the deep and sincere goodness of other people. It gives me hope because it shows me how Heavenly Father can take care of me through the generosity of others. It gives me hope for our world at large and for my small community through the impact of connecting person-to-person. It gives me hope that I can heal with the help of others and that I can pass that love along in a way to help someone else heal. It gives me hope that, no matter how tiny and alone I might feel, someone out there is aware of me and cares about me enough to help, if I'm are willing to accept that help. The other pictures I had taken or considered taking were perhaps more traditional, but I feel that this image illustrates the little man-made ways hope exists around us. And, considering this is a class about media and the constructive and empowering ways we can use media to uplift others, I found this image especially relevant. Yeah, there’s hope in sunrises and the smiles of loved ones and hands clasped together, but there’s also hope in the little black and blue boxes I exchange with people on my phone every day, and that’s pretty cool, too.

  1. I absolutely love this Quinn! Even though this isn't traditionally something we would think of as universally beautiful or hopeful, it still is because of how much it meant to you in that moment when you needed it. I also love how you point out that this is important given the context of our class. We talked about how media is something that encompasses everything from pictures to literature to plays, but it doesn't always have to be so elaborate or 'classic' in its art. Even something as simple as a text message can show the same connection. At its core, media (and art, for that matter) is what connects us in an ever-expanding world. It's about relationships and it's about humanity, and I think you captured that perfectly. The smallest touches and connections give hope and purpose that every individual and every relationship matters.
